Privacy Notice

What it is for

This is an information notice, not a form to be completed. It explains how the Department of Home Affairs collects, uses, stores and discloses personal and sensitive information under the Privacy Act 1988, and how individuals can access or correct their information or make a privacy complaint.

Who completes it

No party lodges it; it is a notice the Department provides to individuals to read and keep, and it supplements the specific privacy notices attached to particular forms.

Information it collects (in general terms)

It does not gather information from a person. Instead it describes the categories of information the Department may collect, including personal information, sensitive information such as health and biometric data, and the sources and legal bases for that collection.

When it is used

Referred to whenever a person provides personal information to the Department, and cross-referenced by many departmental forms so applicants can understand the privacy implications before completing them.
